• No lawn • Colourful flowers and a fern • Recycling the original flagstones where possible • Water feature • Area to grow herbs and tomatoes
• Clear the space of overgrown shrubs and concrete • Lift the flagstones and create a patio • Curved raised beds to flow around the sides of the space • Bring the steps closer to the house to create a larger garden surface • Create a rill in one of the raised beds with a splash down into a basin • Introduce gravel areas to complement the flagstones
This North facing garden needed careful positioning of plants with shade lovers near the house and colourful perennials in the raised beds to achieve optimum light for the sun lovers. The biggest investment was a sizable tree fern and the addition of other ferns and Luzula nivea provide all year around interest without being bothered by the lack of light. Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’, underplanted with Heuchera ‘Binoche’ give a colourful foliage aspect to the medium shade section of the beds; Clematis armandii clads the fencing behind it. The sunspots are planted up with colourful roses, bronze grasses and Campanula carpatica softens the edges of the raised beds.
A colourful mosaic, created by a local artist provides the backdrop for a narrow channel of water which splashes down onto large pebbles surrounded by lush ferns and creates that wonderful sound of water running! The patio area is small but the walls of the raised beds provide extra seating.
Plant pockets in the walls and the gravel are filled with oregano, thyme and chives. This courtyard is a tiny, tucked away haven for the client and requires minimal maintenance.
My garden was transformed from a drab, dark courtyard to a delightful space which continues to please. Marianne's design work was imaginative whilst using every nook and cranny to its full potential, showing many great concepts and ideas to draw from for our ultimate design. The work was carried out with speed and dedication with problems solved quickly along the way. Once the garden was planted up we sat back, watched it all grow, enjoying the sound of the water feature in the background. Loved the service, love the garden!
